Anaerobic Power Testing

Know your explosive ceiling — and train to raise it.

Performance Testing

What Is Anaerobic Power Testing?

Anaerobic power testing determines your maximal power output over short, high-intensity efforts — the explosive capacity that underpins performance in sprinting, jumping, acceleration and team sport. These tests assess your ability to perform short-term exercise at the highest rate possible, with test durations typically ranging from a few seconds up to one minute.

Anaerobic power testing is used by athletes across sprint, mid-distance and team sport disciplines. Most athletic events draw on both aerobic and anaerobic energy systems, and knowing your anaerobic ceiling is as important as knowing your aerobic base — particularly for athletes who compete in repeated high-intensity efforts.

Who It's For

  • Sprint athletes — track, swimming, cycling, rowing
  • Team sport athletes — football, rugby, basketball, netball, hockey
  • Racquet sport athletes requiring explosive first-step and court speed
  • Strength and power sport athletes benchmarking maximal output

The Test Protocol

Anaerobic power tests are conducted using a stationary bike, force plate or sprint-based protocol depending on the sport requirements and clinic equipment. Your EP will discuss the most appropriate protocol for your discipline at initial consultation.

Results provide maximal power output, mean power and fatigue index — key metrics for designing sprint-specific conditioning programs and tracking adaptation over a training cycle.

Translating Results Into Training

Your anaerobic power data informs sprint volume and intensity prescriptions, work-to-rest ratios for interval training and load management across the competition season. Your EP will provide a written report and programming recommendations following testing.
