Lactate Threshold Testing
Train at the right intensity, every time. Lactate testing takes the guesswork out of endurance training.
Performance Testing
What Is Lactate Threshold?
Lactate threshold is the exercise intensity at which lactate begins to accumulate in the blood faster than your body can clear it. Training at, near and above this threshold is one of the most effective ways to improve endurance performance.
Knowing your exact threshold allows you and your coach to set training zones with clinical precision — rather than relying on heart rate estimates or perceived exertion alone.
The lactate threshold test identifies two key metabolic transition points — aerobic threshold (LT1) and anaerobic threshold (LT2) — providing a full picture of your submaximal work capacity. The test is not a maximal effort but rather a step-protocol where intensity increases at set intervals.
Who Benefits From Lactate Testing?
- Endurance athletes — runners, cyclists, triathletes, rowers, swimmers
- Team sport athletes managing aerobic conditioning demands
- Athletes returning from training interruption who need updated benchmarks
- Coaches building periodised training programs for their athletes
- Anyone wanting precise, data-driven training zone prescription

How It's Performed
The test is conducted on a treadmill or stationary bike over approximately 30–40 minutes. At the end of each intensity stage, a small blood sample is taken from the fingertip and analysed for lactate concentration. Your EP collects ventilatory data simultaneously, and a detailed graph of your lactate curve is generated on completion.

Lactate threshold improves through sustained training at and slightly above LT2, combined with aerobic base work. Your EP will use your test results to design an interval and base training structure appropriate for your sport and competition schedule.
