Submaximal Testing
A safe, practical pathway to understanding your aerobic capacity.
Performance Testing
What Is Submaximal Testing?
Submaximal aerobic testing is used to estimate maximal aerobic capacity (VO2 max) without requiring a maximal effort. By measuring physiological responses at controlled sub-maximal intensities, your EP can accurately predict your aerobic capacity using established regression models.
Submaximal protocols are the preferred choice for individuals who cannot safely undergo maximal testing, or for those who require a practical baseline assessment in a clinical context.
Who Submaximal Testing Is For
This testing approach is particularly suited to:
- Individuals with identified cardiovascular risk factors
- People with chronic disease or disability for whom maximal testing is contraindicated
- Older adults seeking a safe fitness baseline
- Patients beginning an exercise rehabilitation or chronic disease management program
- Clients who have not exercised regularly and require a conservative starting point
How It Works
The submaximal test is performed on a stationary bike or treadmill using a step-protocol at progressively increasing intensities — all below your maximal capacity. Heart rate and perceived exertion are monitored at each stage, and VO2 max is estimated using validated prediction equations.
The test typically takes 20–30 minutes and is comfortable throughout. Results inform exercise prescription intensity, program design and baseline tracking over time.
From Testing to Programming
Your results are reviewed with your EP in a post-test consultation. They'll use your estimated aerobic capacity to set safe, effective exercise intensities and build a program appropriate for your current health status and goals.
